Sjóvar Municipality. The old Sjóvar Municipality. included the villages of Selatrað, Strendur, Skáli and Skálafjörður. Of these villages, Skálafjörður is the youngest. It was built sometime in the 1600s. The settlements Morskranes in the 1880s and Innan Glyvur were added in 1884. The newest settlement is Kolbeinagjógv, which came in 1933.
The name Sjóvar parish comes from the farm at Sjógv á Strondum, because there stands the church as it is now, and there have been churches before this place for several hundred years as far back as historical sources reach. The church at Sjógv was the only church in the parish until our time. The church as it is now was built in 1834. A church was built at Selatrað in 1927, and at Skáli in 1940. We do not know how old Sjóvar parish and Strendur are.
On 1 January 1952, Sjóvar parish was divided into two, and Skála and Skálafjörður separated and became an independent municipality under the name Skála municipality. Sjóvar parish retained its old name after the division, now with the villages Innan Glyvur, Strendur, Kolbanargjógv, Morskranes and Selatrað. The municipality includes approx. 70 marks in land. At Strandir there are 19 7/8 mk. property and 20 1/4 mk. land. At Selatrað there are 8 marks of property and 22 marks of land.
