The village of Glyvrar is an old farming village located at sea level in the mild and well-farmed lowlands to the south of Eysturoy.
A lot of activity has taken place here over the last century, and today the village has grown together with Saltangará and Runavík into a continuous residential area stretching 10 km.
Most of the food, furniture, and clothing stores in Eysturoy are in the area, as well as banks, liquor stores, post offices, and cultural centers, alongside a bustling harbor with a small boat harbor. Glyvra Church was originally designed by the Dane Vilhelm Nielsen, who was the priest at Nesi from 1917 to 1927, when the church was also consecrated.
The expansion was overseen by architect J.P. Gregoriussen and is characterized by rhythmic eaves that slope at various sizes.
The church was reconsecrated in 1981. Skálafjørður is the longest fjord in the country and the largest natural harbor in the country, as the fjord has an opening that prevents the sea swell from entering.
One of the world’s largest aquaculture companies, Bakkafrost, has its headquarters in Glyvrar.
